TAMÁSTSLIKT SPECIAL SCHOOL FIELD TRIP DAYS

TAMÁSTSLIKT CULTURAL INSTITUTE IS NO LONGER OFFERING THE CULTURAL NEIGHBORS ALL-DAY FIELD TRIP.
INSTEAD WE PLAN TO OFFER LEWIS & CLARK IN NAAMÍ NÍSHAYCHT (OUR VILLAGE).

Last spring Tamástslikt offered Lewis & Clark activities in our village during April, the month when Lewis & Clark made their 1806 eastbound trip through our country.

At that time, besides sharing several signs of hospitality with the visitors, Walúulapam chieftain Yellepit showed them the overland Indian route that saved them from making the arduous return trek up the Snake River.

During Lewis & Clark in Naamí Níshaycht, school groups rotate through activity stations in the outdoor setting for approximately 1-1/2 hours.

  • Stations include playing the stickgame as documented by the journals;
  • Viewing flintknapping demonstrations of how Indian people made tools before they had metal;
  • Take turns throwing the atlatl, the ancient levered dart used by prehistoric hunters;
  • And visit with a re-enactor of William Clark or other personage of the Corps of Discovery.

There are many possibilities for learning about first encounters between the expeditionary newcomers and the peoples of this land.

At this time Tamástslikt is seeking resources to make this experience accessible to local schools and schools within the boundaries of the ceded territory of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

This activity is suitable for grades 4-7. It is planned for 1-1/2 hour time blocks.

Tamástslikt permanent exhibits will also be open to school groups, and touring the exhibits would require an additional 1-1/2 hours on site.

Lunch space will be offered free-of-charge on a space-available basis.
